BEAT BREAST CANCER

The Breast Cancer 3-Day walk will roll through Chicago Friday through Sunday, Sept. 8 through 10. Besides making donations, supporters can cheer walkers in the street; make signs to show support; or offer walkers ice or a walk through a hose. FITNESS WALK

BodyParts Fitness Foundation will host its annual Bronzeville/South Loop 3.5K Family Fitness Walk on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The walk starts at the host site, Willie Dixon’s Blues Heaven Garden and Museum, 2120 S. Michigan Ave., and heads north/ east to the Solider Field walkway to the lakefront, south to 39th Street, and then turns around to return. ARCHITECTURE CRUISES

The Chicago Architecture Foundation continues its Chicago River cruises through Sunday, Nov. 19. MOVIES AT CLARKE HOUSE

The Reel History outdoor film festival at the Clarke House Museum, 1827 S. Indiana Ave., takes visitors back to the early days of the American West as seen through the lens of director John Ford in his series of classic American films set from the 1840s through the 1880s—the same period in which the Clarke House, Prairie Avenue, and the Glessner House were built. The festival runs Friday evenings through Sept. 29 in front of the museum. Patrons may bring blankets and food, but no dogs. PROJECTS RECEIVE FUNDS

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin announced the Senate Appropriations Committee, of which he is a member, has approved $3.8 million in federal funding for health and education projects in Illinois. Included are $450,000 for behavioral heath services at Access Community Health Network, $300,000 for Cristo Rey High School’s library, and $250,000 for job training and placement for ex-offenders at St. Leonard’s Ministries.

FIRE MUSEUM OPEN HOUSE

The Fire Museum of Greater Chicago will hold its semi-monthly open house on Saturday, Sept. 16, at St. Gabriel School, 4500 S. Wallace St., from noon to 4 p.m. The museum’s holdings include information about fire departments in the greater Chicago area and records going back to the late 1850s. Its library is open the first and third Saturdays of the month at St. Gabriel School and contains books and memorabilia. HAYMARKET WORKSHOPS

BUNGALOW EXPO GOES GREEN

The Historical Chicago Bungalow Expo now offers a section on environmentally sound rehabbing and has been renamed the Historical Chicago Bungalow and Green Home Expo. "HAPPENING" AT HOLY CROSS

“It’s Happening at Holy Cross” is Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Sunday school rally for its new children’s Sunday school program. FALL HARVEST DANCE

Holy Innocents Parish will hold its Fall Harvest Dance on Saturday evening, Sept. 30, featuring music by The Sylvies and a light buffet prepared by neighborhood chef Walter L. Sojka at the Parish Hall, corner of Bishop (1432 west) and Superior (732 north) Streets. Enjoy food, raffles, door prizes, games of chance, and live music. ART CENTER AUCTION

The Hyde Park Art Center will  present its annual benefit auction, “Just Good Art,” from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, followed by an after-party in the main gallery. IIT ROUND-UP

The Illinois Institute of Technology, 3300 S. Federal Ave., hosts summer art exhibits through September. An exhibition of the late Ben Laposky’s electronic abstractions is on display in the Kemper Room Art Gallery of the Paul V. Gavin Library, 35 W. 33rd St., through Saturday, Sept. 16; it features more than 100 color and black and white images. Laposky pioneered electronic art, and this is the first display of his work in 35 years. Also on view at the library through Sept. 16 is Captured Dissipations, by Tom Lauerman, who uses ceramic material that is formed to the edge of collapse and then arrested into a disintegrating cloud. FUNKADELIC FIGHT

The In-Store Marketing Institute announces A Funkadelic Fight against Breast Cancer, its 11th annual Women in P-O-P breast cancer benefit. RELIGIOUS ED AT NATIVITY

Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 653 W. 37th St., will hold registration for religious education (also known as CCD) classes after the 10 a.m. and noon Masses on Sunday, Sept. 17; parents also can register children any weekday morning by stopping at the rectory, calling (773) 927-6263, or logging on to www.nativitybridgeport.org . CCD is available for public school students from first through eighth grade; two years of religious educationare required to receive First Holy Communion, and continuity throughout all eight years is required for Confirmation. Weekly classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 19. All CCD classes take place Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. While there is no set fee, donations in ny amount are welcome.

PEACE DAY

Peace Day focuses on positive ways people can bring peace into their lives while becoming part of a larger peace-making process. First celebrated in 1978, Peace Day observances include one minute of silence for world peace at noon. This year the celebration will be Thursday, Sept. 7, at Daley Center Plaza, where a world peace flag ceremony will present all the flags of the world on stage, one by one.

QUEEN OF PEACE ROUND-UP

Queen of Peace High School has completed facility improvements just in time to welcome students back for the 2006-07 school year. The counseling department and nurse’s office, originally housed in the convent wing, have moved into the school’s heart in its academic wing. The new nurse’s facility can be found on the second floor at the top of the stairs off the marble lobby.

A national fellowship, part of a program focused on improving the country’s healthcare system, has been awarded to Deborah A. Gross, DNSc, RN, FAAN, professor and chairperson, Department of Women’s and Children’s Health Nursing at Rush University College of Nursing. Gross is one of only 20 nurses in executive roles nationwide selected as a 2006 Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow.

The Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center holds its 80th annual fashion show Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave. With the theme Fascinating Rhythm, the show will feature 150 models including Miss Illinois, Catherine Warren, and actress Taylor Miller, best known as Nina Cortlandt on ABC’s daytime drama All My Children. St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church will show Do You Wanna Dance?, a comic film romance and musical inspired by the life and ministry of the Rev. Chris Kerhulas, with special guest Robert Krantz. The event, one of a series celebrating Fr. Kerhulas’s 25th anniversary as pastor at St. Basil, takes place at the St. Basil Fellowship Hall, 733 S. Ashland Ave., on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Afterward Krantz, who starred in, wrote, and co-produced the movie, will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the production, for which Fr. JAZZ AT SHERWOOD

Sherwood Conservatory of Music, 1312 S. Michigan Ave., will offer “Jazz 101: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Jazz—But Didn’t Know Who to Ask” as part of its fall schedule. The nine- eek class will take place Tuesday evenings, Sept. 5 through Oct. 31, 7 to 8 p.m., in the Sherwood Conservatory of Music Recital Hall. Chicago jazz instrumentalist Karl E.H. Seigfried, PhD, director of contemporary music at Sherwood, will lead the class.

Highlights include listening to classic jazz recordings; viewing film footage of jazz greats; and learning jazz styles, periods, and terms. Participants also will discover the current Chicago jazz scene and hear guest performances.

Bright Beginnings at the University of Illinois at Chicago, an enrichment program for toddlers and preschool aged children, will be starting a session on Wednesday, Sept. 6. Within an hour and a half routine, children along with their parents share in movement, music, art, and story time. The activities are developmentally appropriate and are designed to challenge and to be fun. Classes meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

UpShift Creative Group won two 2006 Sammy Awards from the Sales and Marketing Council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago for work for Emerald, an earth-friendly residential development at 120 S. WINE FESTIVAL

The Windy City Wine Festival, presented by Binny’s Beverage Depot, brings more than 250 fine wines from across the globe to Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Grant Park, 337 E. Randolph St., over the BP Bridge east of Millennium Park. It will present 45 vendors, live music, and gourmet specialties. Stations set up around the park will allow visitors to order wine on the spot at a discount. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Grant Park Conservatory. The Honorable Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, accepted the National Association of University Women’s (NAUW) Chicago-City of Legends Award at the organization’s convention.

Arisa Marie Grevan, hostess from Rosebud Restaurant and a University of Illinois at Chicago student, recently was crowned “Queen of the Columbus Day Parade” by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans. The queen and her court will reign over the parade on Monday, Oct. 9. It begins at 12:30 p.m. on olumbus and Balbo Drives.

Bella Itkin, professor emerita of the Theatre School at DePaul University, received the 2006 Children’s Theatre Foundation of American Medallion for more than a half-century of contributions to the art, study, and practice of theatre for all and in particular for youth theatre education.

Metropolitan Family Services President and CEO Richard L. Jones, a South Loop resident, has been named chair-elect of the board of directors of the Alliance for Children and Families and chair of the board of directors of the Insurance Trust for the National Association of Social Workers.

Northwestern Mutual Foundation announced Robert Muzikowski has been named an outstanding volunteer in Northwestern Mutual’s national Community Service Award program because of his founding of Chicago Hope Academy, 2189 W. Bowler St., a private, Christian co-educational life preparatory school.

Gretchen Van Natta has been appointed vice president of human resources at Roosevelt University. She previously had the same title at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care in Wheaton, IL. Two adult residents of the Chicago Christian Industrial League have been awarded scholarships to further their education.

Donnie Conner and Darryl Vann will use their scholarship money to attend Harold Washington College this fall. Both plan to pursue careers in psychology.
