Access Living, 614 W. Roosevelt Rd., received a $275,000 grant from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to fight housing discrimination against people with disabilities. A HUD study found the disabled faced more discrimination in the rental market than African Americans and Latinos. Catholic high schools throughout Cook and Lake Counties are hosting scores of open houses this fall to allow seventh- and eighth-grade students and their parents to meet high school teachers and students and learn more about each school’s academic, extracurricular, and faith formation programs. IIT professors Konstantinos Arfanakis, Miles Wernick, and Yongyi Yang have developed improved MRI technology to help doctors avoid damaging nerves in the brain. Chicago announced the Federal government will make
almost $4 million in emergency food and shelter grants available to local

The Zoppe Italian Family Circus made a rare appearance in Chicago in October, entertaining Pilsen audiences with performances at Dvorak Park. The European-style, big tent show was founded 160 years ago in Italy. The troupe consists of 17 performers, more than a dozen dogs, and six horses. Alderman Danny Solis joined with the Chicago Park District to bring the circus to town. “I want to give the residents of Pilsen an opportunity to experience world renowned acts, such as the Zoppe Family Circus," Solis said. "All children should be exposed to various forms of art, cultures, and traditions. And I am happy to say we have worked to ensure all proceeds go back to Dvorak Park."
