
Frank “Scottie” Conte Jr. dies at age 77
Frank
“Scottie” Conte Jr., a long-time resident of the Near West Side community,
died on Nov. 20, 2006. He was 77 years old.
Mr. Conte was the husband of the late Vivian (nee De Luca); father of Carmella (Jim) Morris; grandfather of Michael and Jimmy Morris; son of the late Frank Sr. and Carmella; brother of Lena Grieco and the late Marie Finneke, Blanche Sokol, and James and Michael Conte; and brother-in-law of Lucille (Dom) Persino and Frances (John) McCormack.
“My father was a warm and friendly person who loved his family and enjoyed his many friendships in the Taylor Street community,” said daughter Carmella Morris. “We express our deepest gratitude to the West Loop Medicine Group, the nurses and support staff at Rush University and Medical Center, and a heartfelt thank you to Dr. David R. Buyer.”
Mr. Conte was employed for many years as a painter for the City of Chicago.
Services were held at Salerno Galewood Chapels. A Funeral Mass was said at St. Giles Church. Entombment is at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum in Hillside.

Jose Ruben Cortez dies at age 79
Jose Ruben
Cortez, a resident of the Taylor Street community for nearly 50 years and
most recently of Stickney, IL, died on Nov. 1 2006. He was 79 years old.
Mr. Cortez was the husband of Virginia (nee Salazar) for 53 years; father of the late Richard (Isela), Patricia (John), Joseph (Maria), and Christina (Danny); grandfather of Tony (Michelle), Maria, Nick, Isaac (Rosa), Erica (Francisco), Roy, Hector, the late Rocco, Jaime, Richard Jr., Michael and Desi; great-grandfather of Nick, Michael, Erica, Julissa, Gabriel, Cassandra, Daniel, and Jonathon and Jezalyn Alyciana.
Services were held at Kopicki’s Heritage Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was said at St. Mary of Czestochowa. Interment is at Saint Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL.

Dominick C. “DoDo” Cantore dies at age 79
Dominick
C. “DoDo” Cantore, a life-long resident of the Near West Side community,
died on Nov. 24. He was 79 years old.
Mr. Cantore was the father of Dominick (Diane), Andrew (Marian), Joseph (Cynthia), Robert and Ralph; son of the late Andrew (the late Anna) Cantore; loving companion of Ereen Bouzeanes and former husband of Carmella Cantore; devoted grandfather of seven; brother of Marie Valicento, Tina (Chris) Avino, Annabella (the late Robert) Whittinghill, Camille (the late Chuckie) Di Maso, Butchie (Phil) Sagan, Richard (Lucy) Cantore, and the late Andrew (the late Rosalie) Cantore; uncle and great-uncle of many.
Mr. Cantore worked for many years as a salesman for the old Polk Bros. furniture chain and was helpful to many area residents in purchasing appliances, televisions, and the like.
He was an accomplished athlete growing up on the Near West Side and encouraged his sons to participate in athletics as well. “My father was a great motivator to all of his sons and encouraged all of us to be the best at everything we tried,” reflected his son, Joseph, during remarks at Mr. Cantore’s Funeral Mass.
“He demanded our respect and he taught us valuable lessons in life such as the importance of being honest. His words were ‘you always want to be able to put your head on your pillow at night and sleep.’ Whenever we did something, we did it first for him and would imagine his reaction when he would see or hear what we accomplished. Most importantly, he was the greatest at being the best father in the world because his love was unending and we always came first in his life.”
Services were held at Salerno Galewood Chapel, Frank Reda & Son, Directors. A funeral Mass was said at the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii. Interment is at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.
