Andrew Jackson principal bids farewell after 33 years

By Ivette Sandoval

The last school year of her career has ended for longtime Andrew Jackson Language Academy Principal Mary Zeltmann, who recently retired.

In her 33 years of service, Zeltmann witnessed many changes at the school, including its 1988 move from the original Carpenter Street location to a new and up-to-date facility at 1340 W. Harrison St. Academy.

Zeltmann taught third through the eighth grade before becoming principal in 1991. “It’s very satisfying to see students make progress and improve their skills in math and writing,” she said.

The school emphasizes language instruction in French, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish and introduces students to other cultures’ geography, history, and traditions.

“I think that, together with the teachers and over the years, I’ve worked very hard and have kept focus on academics and instruction, and I have worked with students by helping them improve to a level of achievement in the academia of core subjects,” Zeltmann said.

She also was committed to preparing students well so they could transition successfully into high school.  “The best thing about being a principal is to remain focused on the task of education and helping students to achieve academically, as well as to help them learn how to work and play together with others,” Zeltmann explained.

“I’m very grateful for the experience that I’ve had for over 30 years," she continued. "I’ve had a lovely time in this area, particularly in the neighborhood and in this school.”

Andrew Jackson Language Academy honored her early last month with the dedication of the Mary & Alys garden sculpture outside the school. Both Zeltmann and Alys Lavicka were recognized for their lifetime service to the school (see related article, page XX). The Local School Council (LSC) organized the farewell celebration.

In choosing someone to succeed Zeltmann, the LSC narrowed the field to two finalists: Matthew Ditto, who had worked with the academy for the last year, and Juliet Rempa, assistant principal at Saucedo Academy. Ditto was chosen because he participated in the University of Illinois at Chicago's Principal Preparation Program and has worked in administration at Andrew Jackson.

“I think he will be an excellent principal," Zeltmann said. "He’s a very hard working person, and he cares and is committed to the welfare of the children and the school.”

Zeltmann does not have any plans for her retirement yet but said she will miss being principal and being at the school.
