LITERACY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Aquinas Literacy Center, 3525 S. Hermitage Ave., is seeking volunteer tutors to instruct adult learners how to read, write, and speak English. Volunteers work one-on-one with students and commit 90 minutes per week. Knowledge of a second language is not required. CHICAGO AIR AND WATER SHOW

The Chicago Air and Water Show will be held at North Avenue Beach on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 and 19. The water show begins at 9 a.m. and the air show runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. CHICAGO ARCHITETURE FOUNDATION ROUNDUP

The Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) architecture river cruise is one of more than 80 architecture tours available throughout the Chicago area. The 90-minute cruise includes fact-filled and anecdotal commentary on Chicago's architecture from the unique vantage point of the river. Tickets are available online through TicketMaster. Walking, bus, and lunchtime tours also are available.

CHICAGO CELEBRATES JAZZ

The 29th annual Chicago Jazz Festival will be held the last week of August through Sunday, Sept. 2. CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY ROUNDUP

Daniel Facchini, co-author of Muldoon: A True Chicago Ghost Story—Tales of a Forgotten Rectory, will discuss his book with historian Ursula Bielski at the Theodore Roosevelt Branch of the Chicago Public Library, 1101 W.                The Friends of the Chicago Public Library, Theodore Roosevelt Branch, hosts its annual book sale Saturday, Sept. 8, 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in front of the library. Proceeds will support ongoing programs. The group will accept donations of books, CDs, and DVDs that are in good condition after Wednesday, Aug. 15. The library will not accept textbooks. De La Salle Institute honored members of its faculty and staff for extraordinary efforts during the 2006-07 school year at the Lourdes Hall and Institute Campuses. Anna Marassa (Bridgeport) and Mike Boehm (Evergreen Park) won Distinguished LaSallian Educator awards, and Jennifer Price (Wicker Park) won the Excellence in Teaching award. HOLY CROSS ROUNDUP

Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Ladies Aid Society will host a Penny Social on Sunday, Aug. 19, at noon in the church assembly hall. There will be raffles, refreshments, and make your own ice cream sundaes. Admission is free.

               On Saturday, Sept. 8, the church will host its second annual Sunday School Rally to raise awareness about its Sunday school program, which is free to any child. HEALTH AND FITNESS FAIR

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Illinois artists are invited to submit applications to the Illinois State Museum’s Illinois Artisans Program (IAP). With a mission to bring national and statewide recognition to the rich heritage of fine crafts in Illinois, the IAP markets crafts at venues around the state. It welcomes all areas of arts and crafts, including folk, traditional, contemporary, ethnic, and country, as well as fine art forms. Artists must submit an application, six to ten slides (preferably digital), an artist’s statement, a one-page resume, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and a $20 application fee made out to IAP.  Deadline for submission is Sept. 12. The Industrial Council of Nearwest Chicago is assessing demand for an I-Go car, which would be housed in its parking lot at Damen and Carroll Avenues. I-Go is a car sharing service in which cars can be reserved in advance; the cost starts at about $6 an hour plus 50 cents per mile usage (with some free usage during off hours). ROOSEVELT PROF HONORED

Peter K. Fallon, associate professor of journalism at Roosevelt University, received the 2007 Marshall McLuhan Award for the outstanding book in media ecology. Fallon received the award June 8 in Mexico City for his book Printing, Literacy, and Education in Eighteenth Century Ireland: Why the Irish Speak English. Fallon joined Roosevelt University in 2003 and teaches media criticism and history, communication ethics, and philosophy of communication.

FEAST OF SAN ROCCO
St. Therese Church,
218 W. Alexander St., will celebrate the Feast of San Rocco di Simbario, patron of the sick. All are welcome to participate in this spiritual, cultural, and traditional celebration of faith. The feast includes a celebration of Italian and religious heritage. A special gourmet buffet dinner will be served free on Sunday, Aug. 19. The celebration begins Saturday, Aug. 18, at 7:30 p.m. with a novena in honor of St. Rocco and anointing of the sick. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at  8:30 a.m., officers and members will meet in front of the church. At 9 a.m., there will be a procession to gather candlehouses. At 10:30 a.m. thre will be a solemn high Mass. There will be an 11:30 a.m. procession through the streets of the community. At  4 p.m. there will be benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at the church. Caliendo’s Banda Napoletana will play in the processions.

The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii are commemorating the 90th anniversary of Frances Xavier Cabrini’s death with a pilgrimage and lecture series through December that is free and open to the public. On

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Valentine Boys and Girls Club after-school program starts in September and runs Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. For an annual fee of $200, members get to interact with youth their own age and participate in organized activities in the game room, computer room, gym, and art room and get to work on their homework in Valentine’s library. YMCA ROUNDUP
The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago received a $10,000 donation from the Community Currency Exchange Association (CCEA) of Illinois as part of a summer-long Back to School drive. CCEA presented the check at the WBBM-FM B-96 booth at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee. The drive, which runs through Aug. 7, is in its third year and counts on the support of Six Flags, Kits for Kidz, and Western Union. The YMCA will use the money to buy school supplies for thousands of children from poor families and will distribute them later this summer. Donations are accepted at all 600 Chicagoland Currency Exchanges.

To help fight obesity and health problems among low-income Chicagoans, the YMCA is offering free family memberships to anyone enrolled in the Y’s subsidized child care programs. Memberships include access to YMCA gyms, pools, fitness equipment, and group exercise classes.

Joseph G. Bisceglia
of the West Loop was installed as the 131st president of the Illinois State Bar Association. Bisceglia is a partner at the law firm of Jenner and Block.

Sebastian Kedziora of West Town recently earned his BS in biology and finance from Elmhurst College.

Darcy Langdon and Elvin Perez, both residents of West Town, were named to the honors list at Dominican University in River Forest. To make the list, students must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours.

            Jessica Matos of Roberto Clemente Community Academy and Tevor Townsend of Benito Juarez Community Academy were finalists in the 2007 City Mock Trials competition. Both received a U.S. savings bond. Roberto Clemente also was a finalist in the team competition.

The Hon. Jane L. Stuart, a judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County, was elected third vice president of the Illinois Judges Association. Stuart received her JD degree from John Marshall Law School, which honored her in 2005 with its Distinguished Service Award.

Carmelita Tiu of the Near West Side recently received the Law Student Division Public Service Award from the Illinois Bar Association. Tiu, a 2007 graduate of DePaul Law School, won for launching the Community Service Initiative, which recruited DePaul students to volunteer at local non-profits.
