AIDS RUN & WALK

An AIDS Run & Walk will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept.15, at Columbus and Balbo Drives in Grant Park. Proceeds benefit the grant-making program of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. To facilitate raising money, individuals and teams can create personal fundraising pages at www.aidsrunwalk.org where friends, family, and co-workers can make pledges. Musical entertainment before the run/walk start will include hip hop artist J Xavier, who also will donate a concert to the high school team with the most participation. Besides the 5K run and 5K walk, the event will offer a Fitness & Healthy Lifestyle Village sponsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health featuring product sampling, service demonstrations, and information about HIV/AIDS related services and volunteer opportunities with local AIDS service providers and other organizations. SUCIDE PREVENTION WALK

Every 16 minutes in the United States, someone dies by suicide. This year thousands of men and women in more than 100 communities across the country will participate in the 2007 Out of the Darkness Community Walks to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) by raising money for AFSP's research and education programs for increasing awareness and helping survivors of suicide loss. There is no registration fee and no minimum participants must raise. The Chicagoland Community Walk will be held at Busse Woods Ned Brown Meadow (entrance on Golf Road and Route 53) Saturday, Sept. 29, with a 10 a.m. sign in and 11 a.m. walk start. ANNUAL FAMILY FITNESS WALK

Rain or shine, Body Parts Fitness Foundation will host its Fitness Walk starting at Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Garden & Museum at 2120 S. SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS

The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has teamed with SchoolKidz Inc. to provide school supplies to thousands of homeless students. The Kits For Kidz program, in which donors provide essential items including backpacks, pens, pencils, paper, and glue to needy students, kicked off recently at Attucks Elementary, 3813 S. Dearborn St. Nearly 10,000 CPS students are classified as homeless for the coming 2007-08 school year. SchoolKidz Inc. provides different supply kits for primary, elementary, and junior high/high school students. Donors can visit www.kitsforkidz.org/CPS and for $11 each can purchase a school supply kit. For an additional $6 a donor can purchase a backpack. STATE OF THE DISTRICT

Congressman Danny K. Davis of the 7th District will offer a state of the district session on Friday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an open session at 7 p.m., at Malclom X College, 1900 W. Jackson St. The session will allow residents to discuss their feelings about issues important to them, including healthcare, the war, and crime. DPAC PARK ROUND-UP

The Dearborn Park Block Party at Plymouth Court and 13th Street is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 8 and is organized and partially subsidized by the Dearborn Park Advisory Council (DPAC). It will feature numerous activities for children, grilling, and entertainment. A $5 requested donation entitles visitors to food and games all day long.

Running track upgrades soon will be underway in Dearborn Park at Plymouth Court and Ninth Street and at Roosevelt Park (accessed from Plymouth Court and from south Park Terrace, extending to Roosevelt Road). Planners have not determined whether new gravel will be added or whether a ‘rubberized’ surface will be placed on the tracks.

Speed humps will be placed on Ninth Street and south Park Terrace and along south Park Terrace as it winds to Roosevelt Park due to greater vehicular traffic along those streets.

            A five-unit development is scheduled for the northeast corner of Dearborn and Polk Streets; units will cost approximately $1 million each. Another new South Loop development includes a student dormitory on Clark Street near Harrison Street. Also, the Taylor Street bridge may be extended to connect the West and South Loop. 

DE LA SALLE ROUND–UP 

De La Salle Institute’s Youth and IT Summer Internship Program enabled De La Salle students to work on PCs, remove more than 360 hard drives, inspect and remove damaged keyboards, install new keyboards, and inspect batteries and styluses. Participants included students Paul Guttillo, Joseph LasCola, Rocco Piraino, and Gordon Tsang, all of Bridgeport.

            Student-athlete Kris Powell recently competed in the Illinois High School Association's state tennis tournament. For his efforts, Powell finished in the top 32 in the state; he also placed fourth in the Chicago Catholic League at No. 1 singles this season and was second at the University High Sectional.

VETERANS' HOME MORTGAGE PROGRAM

State Rep. Elga Jefferies (D-Chicago) recently joined Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs director Tammy Duckworth and Bill Sminiotis and DeShana Forney of the Illinois Housing Development Authority IHDA in announcing the launch of a new $15 million mortgage program to help Illinois veterans afford their own houses. The G-I Loan for Heroes program offers a low-interest rate first mortgage for the first 80% of the purchase price and an interest-free mortgage for the other 20%, up to $40,000. The program also provides free ownership counseling and a grant of up to $2,500 to cover closing costs. POETRY CENTER APPOINTS DIRECTOR

The Poetry Center of Chicago appointed Francesco Levato as its new executive director. He will direct and manage the staff and work with the board of directors and advisory board to chart a strategic plan. Levato also will curate and organize the Poetry Center’s reading series, facilitate various programs, and preside over the Hands on Stanzas program, a literacy-through-poetry partnership with the Chicago Public Schools. Levato is a poet, activist, and new media artist.

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has won a $9.6 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish an Autism Center of Excellence. UIC is one of five funded centers in the U.S. and the only Midwest site. UIC and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago will collaborate on a three-year study about the health effects of water exposure during recreational use of waterways. Presented by the Young China Club in Chinatown, the Moon Festival is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar (the other being the Chinese Lunar New Year). The celebration will feature a lion dance competition, martial arts, traditional dancing, Chinese opera, and a lantern show. Vendors will offer a variety of wares. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White recently was honored by the International Association of Commercial Administrations (IACA) with an Award of Merit for his business services site on the www.CyberdriveIllinois.com website. The award was presented in Seattle at the IACA’s 30th annual conference.
