Lojzka Schuck dies, was Bridgeport Catholic teacher

Lojzka (Louise) Schuck, a teacher at Bridgeport Catholic Academy for 12 years, died on July 9 at age 52.

Born July 14, 1954, Mrs. Schuck was the wife of Michael for 26 years, and the mother of Mateja, Aloysius, and Franz.

Besides teaching at Bridgeport Catholic Academy, she also taught at Our Lady of Good Counsel School for eight years and in Toronto, Canada. Mrs. Schuck also assisted in the development of the language arts curriculum for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

At Bridgeport Catholic Academy, Mrs. Schuck taught language arts in Grades 5 to 8,” said Lorraine Supinski, a friend and retired Bridgeport Catholic Academy teacher. “She was excellent in the development of writing and thinking skills of children.”

Mrs. Schuck established a quarterly school newspaper at Bridgeport Catholic Academy. She also worked diligently to raise awareness and money for missionary work by getting involved with Operation Rice Bowl, sponsoring a bake sale, and taco-in-abag day.

“Mrs. Schuck was a dedicated teacher who expected nothing less than the very best from her students,” said Mary Pat Palumbo, a friend and fellow faculty member.

“Even during her illness, Mrs. Schuck would often be at school burning the midnight oil.”

She also taught Saturdays at the Slomsek Slovenian School, which was established more than 50 years ago by immigrants who wanted to preserve Slovenian culture.

She taught lessons on Slovenian culture for many years from October through mid-May at St. Stephen’s and then in Lemont, IL.

“She was and is a great gift to all who knew and loved her,” said Lillian Buckley, principal of Bridgeport Catholic Academy.

Dolores Saviano dies at age 71

Dolores Saviano (nee Metallo), a life-long resident of the Near West Side community, died suddenly on August 27.  She was 71 years old.

Mrs. Saviano was the wife of the late Edward Saviano Sr.; mother of Edward Jr.  and Carl (Patti) Saviano; grandmother of Niki “Dee” Saviano and Anthony Chilelli; and sister of Frank Metallo.  She was the daughter of the late Carmen and Julia Metallo.

Services were held at Salerno Galewood Chapels and a Funeral Mass was said at the Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii.

“Mom was known for her spunk and energy and will be missed in the community,” said Carl, her son.  “She managed 18 apartment units until her death and nobody pushed her around.  I’m sure Laflin and Lexington Streets will be quieter now that she is gone.”

“She had lots of energy,” added son, Ed. “I used to tell her, ‘Mom, you could enter an empty room and cause havoc.  She had that much fire in her.  We will miss her dearly.”

Internment is at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.
