Holy Week services remind us of salvation, eternal life

Holy Week in 2008 comes earlier than in any year since 1913.  Although you may have to forego your Easter bonnet for a warm winter hat this year, the reason for the season remains the same: Jesus of Nazareth's message of salvation and eternal life.

            Palm Sunday is March 16; Holy Thursday is March 20; Good Friday is March 21; Holy Saturday is March 22; and Easter Sunday is March 23. 

BRIDGEPORT

            All Saints-St. Anthony Church, 518 W. 28th Pl., (312) 842-2744, fax (312) 842-2791. During Holy Week, there will be no 7:45 a.m. Masses on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, or Holy Saturday, and there will be no 5 p.m. Mass on Holy Saturday.  Holy Week services will include: Mass of the Lord’s supper will be celebrated on Holy Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by adoration until 10 p.m.  On Good Friday, there will be the Lord’s passion in English at 3 p.m. and in Spanish at 7 p.m. Easter vigil will be celebrated at 7 p.m. on Holy Saturday. Easter Masses will be celebrated at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. in English, and at 10 a.m. in Spanish.

            First Lutheran Church of the Trinity, 643 W. 31st St., (312) 842-7390. On Sun., March 16, there will be a Christian seder meal at 6 p.m. On Good Friday, tenebrae service of darkness with the "Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross" will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m.  Easter Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. with brunch following.             Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3118 S. Racine Ave., (773) 523-3838. Easter services for Holy Cross include: Palm Sunday worship, 10:30 a.m. and at 11:45 a.m., spring brunch in the church assembly hall; Thur., March 20, Maundy Thursday Service, 7 p.m.; Fri., March 21, Good Friday tenebrae service, 7 p.m.; Sun., March 23, 7 a.m. Easter “Sonrise” service and at 10:30 a.m., Easter festival worship.

On Palm Sunday, March 16, the regular Mass schedule will be observed: Mass in English at 8 a.m., in Spanish at 9:15 a.m.; in Croatian at 10:15 a.m.; in English at 10:45 a.m.; in Spanish at noon and 1:15 and 5 p.m.  On Holy Thursday, the Mass of the Lord’s supper will be celebrated at 7 p.m. On Good Friday, there will be a “Living Way of the Cross,” a procession that will commence with a gathering of participants at Halsted St. and 18th St. at 8:30 a.m., with various stops along the way, toward 18th St. and Damen Ave. (Harrison Park) where there will be a reenactment of the crucifixion. Also on Good Friday, there will be a liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 7 p.m. March 22, Holy Saturday, there will be an Easter vigil at 8 p.m. On Easter Sunday, the regular Mass schedule will be observed.

In celebration of Easter, there will be a Lenten penance service on Sat., March 8, at 3 p.m. Masses for Palm Sunday will be celebrated on Sat., March 15, at 4 p.m. and on Sun., March 16, at 8:30 a.m. in Latin and at 10:30 a.m. in English. On Holy Wednesday, March 19, tenebrae will be commemorated at 7:30 p.m.  The Lord’s supper Mass will be celebrated on Holy Thursday at 7 p.m. Adoration will be held until midnight. The Good Friday stations of the cross will be held at 3 p.m. The Passion service is scheduled on Good Friday at 7 p.m. Blessing of the Easter baskets is scheduled for noon on Holy Saturday. The Easter vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.  Easter Sunday Mass will be held at noon.

            Our Lady of Fatima Church, National Shrine of Saint Anne, 2751 W. 38th Pl., (773) 927-2421. Lenten missions are held every Fri. during Lent following the stations of the cross at 5 p.m. On Palm Sunday, Masses will be celebrated at 7 and 10:30 a.m. in English, and at 8:45 a.m., noon, and 1:45 p.m. in Spanish. Tenebrae service will be held on Holy Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Bilingual Mass of the Lord’s supper will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. with adoration until midnight. On Good Friday, stations of the cross will be commemorated at 4:30 p.m. followed at 5 p.m. with veneration of the cross and communion services. A bilingual Easter vigil will be celebrated at 8 p.m. on Holy Saturday. On Easter Sunday, the regular Mass schedule will be observed.

On Holy Thursday, March 20, Mass of the last supper will be celebrated at 7 p.m. To observe Good Friday: stations of the cross are scheduled at 3 p.m. and commemoration of the Lord’s passion at 7 p.m.  There will be blessing of the baskets on Holy Saturday, March 22, at 11 a.m. On Holy Saturday evening, an Easter vigil will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m. in Spanish, and at 10:30 a.m.

There will be a Lenten fish dinner on Friday, March 14 from noon to 3 p.m. (call for information). Services will be held on Holy Thursday (call for time). The Easter vigil celebration will be held on Holy Saturday (call for time). Easter Sunday celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m.

            St. Barbara Church, 2859 S. Throop St., (312) 842-7979. During Holy Week, there are a number of services. On Monday, there is a parish Lenten reconciliation service at 7 p.m.  Morning prayer services will be held on Thurs., Fri. and Sat.  Mass commemorating the last supper will be celebrated on Thurs. at 7 p.m. A stations of the cross service will be held on Good Friday at 3 p.m. and, a veneration of the cross service at 7 p.m.  On Saturday, blessing of the Easter baskets will take place at noon, and the Easter vigil Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Masses on Easter Sunday will be held at 6:30, 9:30, and 11:30 a.m.

            St. Gabriel Roman Catholic Church, 4522 S. Wallace St., (773) 268-9595. St. Gabriel’s schedule for Holy Week includes: Mass at 10 a.m. on Palm Sunday, 6:30 p.m. Mass commemorating the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, 3 p.m. Services on Good Friday, Easter vigil Mass on Holy Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and two masses on Easter Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m.

            St. Jerome Croatian Catholic Church, 2823 S. Princeton Ave., (312) 842-1871. Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday. On Good Friday, a service will be held at 3 p.m. and a procession with a wooden cross at 6 p.m., with services following. An Easter vigil with baptisms will be held Holy Saturday at 7 p.m. Services on Easter Sunday will be held at 7:30, 9:30, and 11 a.m.

            St. Lucia’s Catholic Church, 3022 S. Wells St., (312) 842-6115. During Holy Week, there will be a celebration of the Lord’s supper at 7 p.m. on Holy Thursday. On Good Friday, there will be a veneration of the cross at 3 p.m. and stations of the cross at 7 p.m. On Holy Saturday, the Easter vigil will be celebrated at 7 p.m. and Easter Sunday Masses will be held at 9 and 11 a.m.

            Sts. Peter and Paul, 3745 S. Paulina St., (773) 523-3410. Church opens at 8 a.m. for prayer during Holy Week. Holy Thursday, Mass of the Lord’s supper will be celebrated at 7 p.m. followed by adoration until midnight. On Good Friday there will be a 9 a.m. prayer service. At 3 p.m. on Good Friday, there will be the stations of the cross and the Lord’s death in English, and then in Spanish at 7 p.m. Holy Saturday, 9 a.m. prayer, followed by blessing of the Easter baskets at noon and 12:30 p.m. Easter vigil will be commemorated at 7:30 p.m. on Holy Saturday. Masses on Easter Sunday will be celebrated in English at 8 a.m., in Polish at 10 a.m., and in Spanish at noon.

 

BRONZEVILLE

            Apostolic Faith Church, 3823 S. Indiana Ave., (773) 373-8500. There will be two Good Friday services: noon and 7:30 p.m. on March 21. On Easter Sunday, March 23, corporate prayer will be held at 7 a.m., early morning worship at 8 a.m., Christian education at 9:45 a.m., and morning worship at 11:30 a.m.

Lenten Service will be held on Wed., March 12, at 6 p.m. Palm Sunday service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Maundy Thursday, March 20, service will be held at 6 p.m. On Good Friday, all area AME churches will commemorate “The Last Seven Words” at St. James AME Church, 9256 S. Lafayette St. at noon.  Bethel AME Church’s Easter Sunday, March 23, service will be held at 11 a.m.
